Students working in the Department of Zoology can either belong to it and study in one of its programs (see below) or conduct their studies through the Porter School of environmental studies which has both M.Sc and Ph.D. programs. M.Sc. students belonging to the Department of Zoology are usually assigned to one of the following programs: either a general program in Zoology, a program in Ecology and Environmental Quality or a program in Theoretical and Mathematical Biology. More information on the various requirements of the different M.Sc. programs can be found here. Ph.D. degrees can be pursued either directly after a bachelors title by excellent candidates, after commencing a M.Sc. (transfer from a M.Sc. to a Ph.D. program) or after completion of a masters degree.
Most graduate students in our department receive both a tuition scholarship and a livelihood stipend. The amount of this stipend differs between M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees and between different stages within these degrees. The value of the stipend can be between 50-200% of the nominal 100% scholarship which are outlined in this outdated document (page 7). For more updated scholarship figures we suggest you ask current students.
Apart from scholarships some of the graduate students are occupied as tutors or teaching assistants in various courses given by the department. If this is of interest to you we suggest that you express your desire and elaborate your qualification to both your intended supervisor and the departmental secretariat.
